Owning a boat gives you opportunities to explore nature and make memories with your family and friends. If you want to save money while still getting a great-quality boat, you can investigate the used boat market. Used boats offer a lot of value, but you do need to inspect them to make sure you’re getting the best used boat you can. Here’s what to look for when you’re examining a used boat that interests you.

Look Over the Exterior

Examine the hull of the boat and make sure that there are no cracks in the gel coat. If there are cracks that are longer than 2”, these may become a serious problem later on. You should also check the metal fittings for signs of corrosion and look over all the wood to make sure it’s not rotted.

Check Oil & Fuel

Opening the nacelle of the engine will allow you to take a look at the oil and fuel. Both fluids should be topped off, clean, and free of sludge or debris. Water or rust in these reservoirs are indicative of a serious issue.

Walk Through the Interior

Finally, you’ll want to walk around the inside of the boat to check for signs of damage or corrosion. While some cosmetic damage is to be expected, you don’t want to see major water damage or rust or mildew all over the boat. The interior should be clean and the electronics should work as expected.
