How to Safely Dock Your Boat
You have many things to learn when you’re a new boater, and one of the most important tasks you’ll need to master is bringing your boat into dock. For new and experienced boat owners alike, docking presents some challenges, but you can make it less stressful by following these tips.
Approach Dock Slowly
Trying to dock your boat while speeding into the marina is only going to cause you more problems. You should never approach the dock at a speed higher than you want to hit it, since you are liable to do if you’re going too fast. Instead, keep your boat at a steady, even pace as you pull into the marina; don’t go so slowly that you’re buffeted around by the winds, but don’t go so fast that you can’t make adjustments.
Watch the Wind
Speaking of the wind, it can either help or hinder the docking process, depending on the way it’s blowing. If the wind is blowing you towards the dock, then don’t use your engine as much and allow the wind to gently guide your boat into the slip. However, if the wind is against you, you’re going to have to use more power to get the boat situated.
Make Small Adjustments
Twisting the helm back and forth and making sharp turns won’t go well for you when trying to dock. Your movements must be measured and careful so that you can adjust as needed. Some people like to dock with the stern at the pier instead of the bow, since this can be easier. However you choose to dock, just make sure that you are vigilant and that you secure the boat snugly with your dock lines when you’re done.
